I subscribed! I am generally a penny pincher and i usually opt for the “free” tier, but you, sir, are a TRUE american hero and are deserving of every penny. I look forward to this endeavor of yours and congrats on to you and Lindsey on your journey into parenthood. As a mother of two, who turn 7 & 10 in the coming days, i can verify that it will be the most fulfilling experience of your life.
I can barely contain my excitement about you being here, and me being able to read your thoughts UN-EDITED. Looking forward to many lengthy discussions.
Elaine Harger, Managing editor of an independent librarians association (Progressive Librarian Guild)--wrote "Abandoning Snowden… and Privacy?Hegemony at Play in ALA."
She stated: Why does it matter that, with respect to Edward Snowden himself,
ALA went from recognizing “Edward Snowden as a whistleblower who, in
releasing information…has performed a valuable service” to urging “the U.S.
Congress and President Obama to provide authentic protections that prevent
government intimidation and criminal prosecution of government employees
and private contractors who make disclosures of wrong doing in the intelligence
community”?
Simply this: ALA abandoned a clear, unequivocal statement identifying
Snowden as a whistleblower deserving of “authentic protections,” in favor of
one appealing to two bodies, the legislative and executive, who ALA knew were
actively, publicly, or otherwise denying Snowden such protection."
Harger's meticulous documentation of how this played out at the American Library Association is stunning.
I have followed your story for quite some time, and forever burned into my memory are your words: Saying you don’t care about privacy because you have nothing to hide is like saying you don’t care about freedom of speech because you have nothing to say. I am so glad you are here and excited to hear more.
I posted my first comments a little while ago. I goofed! First thing I should have said: “Thank you Mr. Snowden. You are a true patriot.” Thanks for giving the public the truth.
"high integrity" can be used when Ed said something along the lines of "people who don't like anime should be put into re-education camps". I laughed so hard when I read that in his book. You're the man Ed.
Ed -- how much do you think the current state of the internet is due to the surveillance impetus of state actors, and how much do private forces of monopoly? Or are they inherently related? Curious which end of the dog is wagging which, in your opinion.
Thanks Ed. Most worth reading in a long time. What idealists we were. The internet was supposed to bring us together, free access to everything, a network to participate in.
Except for a few free spots, we now have what governments and telcos always wanted: an internet with traditional sender and receiver and the price we pay is damn high.
Edward, Edward, you are of course welcomed to Substack, to more of an audience, and we all are, and will be even more so, glad to hear more from you, but you don't have to go out of your way to sound more sophisticated by using so many "big words". In the process you misspelled at least one of them (I believe it was supposed to be spelled, omniscience, not omniscence). We're all with you. We all know you're intelligent. So you don't need to prove it to us or to anyone.
I don't at all have a problem with the big words, but please make your thoughts more accessible to the masses, including the "dumbed-down" and those not yet awakened to and been set free by the truth of what is really going on. Please don't drive away those who are less sophisticated, and/or those who are still brainwashed by the false propaganda of the powers-that-be. Please don't only "preach to the choir" and lose (far too many?) people with your "wordsmithing", but speak to the masses.
Edward, please don't "grow an ego". We know you did right. We know you're not a traitor, but the opposite; yet, please don't let it "go to your head". Please be humble in your "heroicness". Yes, you are invariably going to lose some people; heck, already have lost them; but please don't lose more people by sounding like the very important things you have to share are only meant for the "more intelligent", and/or the "Silicon Valley nerds". Seek mostly to wake up the dumbed-down.
Perhaps I should clarify: When I said I don't have a problem with the big words, I meant that I don't have a problem understanding them; but in our extremely, and increasingly, dumbed-down society, many if not most people don't understand them, though they will not directly admit it because they don't want to appear stupid. It's not their fault. They have been intentionally and systematically dumbed-down through the use of the chemicals in the air, food and water. And it wasn't only about dumbing them down, but also about purposefully making them more and more unhealthy, and sickly, so they would have to spend exorbitant sums of money supporting the obscenely profitable "health care" and pharmaceutical system(s); as well as, of course, making them passive, conforming, unquestioningly obedient to government edicts, and unable and/or unwilling to fight back against the increasing government overreach, authoritarianism and totalitarianism of today's global(ist), elitist oligarchy at the expense of most of humanity, all intentional and systematic.
I should have added people being dumbed-down, especially in the U.S., by the insipid educational system too, of course, which has sought for decades to make most people shallow and stupid. But you add that together with the chemicals, etc., and you've got a recipe for disaster as far as liberty and freedom are concerned (those people, who are in the majority, don't even know that there's any freedom and liberty to stand up for, and have actually been led to believe that dissenting is "un-American", etc.); though, naturally it is not a disaster for the powers-that-be who want to make us conform and passively walk over the edge of the cliff that they have put in front of us and purposely designed for us walk off the edge of.
>The US was founded in rebellion. Then established on a document which equates individual freedoms with God given rights. Then spent 200+ years basically telling their children and children's children that they live in the best place ever where no one can tell you what to do.
>Then get confused when no one does what the government tells them to do.

Ok, I’ll give this a go in terms of continuing Ed. I consider your life choices a high example of bravery. I look forward to the challenges I’ll face in coming to terms with how best to present ourselves, given the conditions you describe.

HOLY CRAP!
Take my money Ed!
I’m so excited that substack is thriving so much, things like this give me hope that there is a chance to escape THE PARTY’S unilateral authority.
Well said!
Take my money, too. Sorry I don’t have much!

The American Library Association (ALA), Social Responsibilities Round Table passed a resolution supporting you: "Resolution in support of whistleblower Edward Snowden" in 2013: https://www.ala.org/rt/sites/ala.org.rt/files/content/SRRT/Resolutions/2013/Snowden.pdf
When presented to the entire Association the resolution was modified with a resolution on the need for reforms for the intelligence community to support privacy, open government, government transparency, and accountability : https://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/blogs/the-scoop/whistleblower-issues-dominate-council-iii-session/

So grateful to be here. Thank you for your bravery and service from a fellow Marylander. Sending you and your new family love and support!
Ed, you are an inspiration -- thank you for your courage and high integrity.
Stay well and best wishes, with immense gratitude one of your fans -- Boris

Well, I guess I'm "ready" for the camps then.
I never got into anime but my son LOVES it 😉
I can't believe you are here. And committing to weekly posts. This is such a good news. Thanks and hope to soon hear the news of pardon for you.

Bezos works with/for the government; both are monopolies.
Thank you for everything that you have done!
Thank you for all you've done on the field of privacy and civil liberties.

"making them passive, conforming, unquestioningly obedient to government edicts" Is that why the US has the most coronavirus cases in the world, over 300 times more than China? https://www.reddit.com/r/news/comments/jt8j51/fauci_says_us_has_independent_spirit_but_now_is/
